Gateway
A device that connects to the network and converts a signal to be transmitted via IP. In telephony the classic use of a gateway is to convert POTS or analog lines to IP. As an example, we use a gateway to bring SIP Trunks into an xBlue Key System.

Telephone Company
a.k.a. "The Dark Lord" consists of the local companies that once held the monopoly for all local telephone services. They were guaranteed a return on their expenses so while they were monitored they use various sleight of hand tricks to raise their returns. For example many had their own Supply Companies that sold primarily to themselves at inflated prices. The Dark Lord made their normal regulated return on the Telco side but made phenomenal profits on the unregulated supply business.
