Voicemail
The business feature that gives every employee a voice mailbox used to take messages while they are busy or away from their office. They typically also feature an Automated Attendant which answers acts as a receptionist to answer company calls and distribute them to the correct individual or department. Voicemail is an essential piece to a professional office, but must be managed to assure proper phone etiquette is maintained.
The X16 Key System is an excellent basic system for the company wanting big system features at a budget price, and it is easy enough to install and program yourself. If you are interested in purchasing 2-line or 4-line phones at an office supply store, then you should consider an X16. By investing a few dollars more, you get true Voicemail, Automated Attendant, and Call Announce with Hands Free Response intercom. You also get DSS/BLF buttons to see what others are doing in your office.
This system is designed specifically for an office environment with between 2 to 5 lines and 12 or fewer users that need to handle basic telephone services: make a call, take a call, put a call on hold and have someone pick up the line at another extension; page individuals or intercom extensions with hands free answerback. For big system features the X16 has a basic Automated Attendant and Voicemail.
The X16 out of the box is equipped to bring 4 incoming lines and will connect up to 16 proprietary X16 phones. With the addition of an optional board you can add 2 more incoming lines for a total of 6. Installation is a snap with a single small package for the KSU that can either sit on a shelf or be mounted to a wall. Just plug in the box, plug up the phones, plug in the telephone lines and start using the system. The savings of design and simplicity of installation stems from the shared data bus which shares four stations over one bus. This also simplifies the wiring so that each connection to the phone system is terminated serially to connect four telephones. In simple terms you connect the first telephone then run wire from the first to the second and make the same connection, then the second to third and finally third to fourth telephone. This is very easy if you have a small office and you need to run cable anyway. This differs from a traditional telephone system where every telephone has to have a wire home run to the KSU.
Programming of the system and the stations is even simpler than the installation and cabling. There is minimal system programming consisting of mainly setting up the voice mail Automated Attendant and changing any of the default timers of the system. All programming is done via any telephone in the system so no connection to a pc or website is necessary. Most of the station programming takes place at the individual telephone and is likewise extremely easy.

Automated Attendant (Auto Attendant)
A system that answers calls and provides the caller with enough information to chose who they need to speak with and then transfers the call to that group or individual. Some companies use this technology to make their business look larger and others use it as a backup to live answering.
Call Announce
This business feature allows an employee to call a specific phone and announce a caller or some other information. Most systems also feature Hands Free Response which allows the announced individual to respond back via speakerphone without even having to touch the phone.
Data Bus
A collection of wires through which data is transmitted from one part of a computer to another. You can think of a bus as a highway on which data travels within a computer.
DSS/BLF (Direct Station Selection/Busy Lamp Field)
Buttons on a key telephone that can be programmed for an individual station so that pressing the button intercoms the station (DSS) and when the station is busy the button will light (BLF).
Hold
A business feature where a call is temporarily held by the KSU or Server and the caller typically hears music or an announcement during this time. Hold is used while sending the caller to another extension, while setting up a conference call, or while answering another call or simply when looking up information.
Home Run
No, this is not what Alex Rodriguez hits on a daily basis for our Yankees! It is a wiring structure where each device has a wire run all the way back to the KSU or Server. Traditional TDM and Digital phone system require home run wiring. Our IP solution and our xBlue do not.
KSU (Key Service Unit)
The traditional control unit for a Key Systems. Usually consisting of a central processor and card support for telephone lines and proprietary digital key stations.
Page
This business feature allows an employee, using the handset of their phone, to make an announcement or "page" the rest of the company via the speakers in inactive phones or via overhead speakers or via a combination of both. This is generally a one way conversation only. Page is typically used when you don't know exactly where to find someone.
Telephone Line (Line)
A single line that connects a subscriber (you) with the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) a.k.a. "the phone company". Lines may be either analog or digital.
